PROPOSAL FOR A MILLION LOAN. ART GALLERY SWINDLE. THE PAYMENT OF MEMBERS IN QUEENSLAND. (Received July 30, 3.30 p.m.) Adelaide, July 30.. The South Australian Parliament has adopted the measure for providing for the payment of members, on the Canadian system, which provides for payment of so much per diem, with a deduction in case of absence. Hobart, July 30. The Colonial Treasurer, the Hon. W. H. Burgess, introduced his financial statement last night. He stated in the course of his speech that £30,000 had been expended by the colony during the past year for defence purposes. It is proposed to float a new loan of £1,000,000. (Received July 31, 1.10 p.m.) Sydney, July 31. Considerable sensation has been caused in artistic circles in this city by the discovery that the picture “Roll Call,” which was purchased by the Trustees of the Art Gallery as a replicate by Miss Thompson of her celebrated picture, is only a French copy and not a genuine replicate by the artist herself. Brisbane, July 31. The Legislative Council last night rejected the bill sent up from the Assembly providing for the payment of members. It is probable, however, that the sura required will be placed upon the Estimates.
