[united press association.! Wellington, July 20. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon, to consider the proposed renewal of the San Francisco mail subsidy, the following resolution was carried:—"That in the opinion of this Chamber the San Francisco mail service has ceased to be of importance, and in the general interest of the colony it is desirable that arrangements should be made for a fortnightly direct service.'' It is understood that Government have received a favorable cable from the delegates sent Home in regard to the East and West Coast Railway (Middle Island). In the Bankruptcy Court to-day, an application was made on behnlf of the London City Missionary Society requesting to be allowed to prove against thp estate of W. Waring Taylor, for a debt of £SOOO. The matter has been allowed to stand over, pending the receipt of a communication from Mr Jonas Arundel, oue of the supervisors in the estate, and who is at present in Sydney. Auckland, July 20. James Dunn, the noted burglar, who was released from Wellington Gaol in January last, after undergoing 14 years for burglary, and who was arrested here for drunkenness, and threatening to draw a revolver on the arresting constable, and subsequently charged with the robbery of a watch and chain, but acquitted, was again taken redhanded while robbing the Oxford Hotel, in Kording street, by Constable Herbert, who had "shadowed" him, suspecting he would be up to old tricks. Dunn made a desperate resistance, and drew a revolver, with which he aimed a blow at the constable, but. missed him, and before he could recover himself, the constable succeeded in wrenching the weapon from him. Another

struggle took place, and the constable, knowing the desperate character he had to deal with, struck him on the head with the handcuffs, which partially stunned him and then handcuffed him. In his pocket was found a very sharp table-knife. About £2 was taken from the till. Dunedin, July 20. One of the Great Extended Company's batteries at Blur Spur, Lawrence, was burnt down yesterday. Insured in the Mercantile Union £6OO, and Equitable, for a similar amount. The latter is partly re-insured. The loss is £IBOO over the insurance ; no cause is assigned. Kaikoura, July 20. James Burnett, a tailor, committed suicide early this morning by catting his throat with a razor. He had been drinking for some time. The body of the man Dolan, who was drowned at Rakaia on the 13th, was discovered yesterday washed up on a shingle spit near the mouth of the river.
