The twenty-one sailors who were sent to gaol in May last for refusing duty on board the steamer Coptic, have instructed Mr Shaw to take proceedings against the master and owners of the vessel for malicious prosecution. At the inquest on Robert Sailors, who poisoned himself with “Rough on Rats” yesterday, a verdict was returned that deceased died from the effects of poison administered by himself while suffering from the effects of drink. Dudley Ward, a man employed on a building in Wyndhara street, fell and sustained fatal injuries. At the civil session of the Supreme Court, Dr. Caldwell, of Kawakawa, recovered £SO damages against George Brewer, blacksmith, for slandering his professional ability in setting a leg of Brewer’s son. Dr. Caldwell is Bishop of the Madras, In the case of George Elliott, of Deniliquin, N.S.W., and Thomas Hancock, brewer, for an alleged libel published in “ Recollections of the Life of Thomas Hancock,” tin* judge summed up strongly for defendant. Verdict—damages, £2OO.

William Hancock, of the barque Notero, from Lyttelton, was iujiued while discharging cargo ; tho slings broke. The ease is regarded as hopeless. Dunedin, July 15. John Byfield, while lepairing the telephone lines, fell through a skylight of the building over which the wires passed, and received rather severe injuries.
