QUANTITY OF WHEAT AFLOAT. REOCCUPATION OF ASSOUAN BY THE BRITISH. REPORTED DEATH OF THE MAHDI. DECREASE OF THE CHOLERA IN SPAIN. AMERICAN WHEAT CROP. (Received July 13, 1.10 a.m.) London, July 11. The election of a member of Parliament for North Lincolnshire in place of Mr Rowland Winn, who is elevated to the Peerage, took place to-day and resulted in the return of the Conservative cmdidate, Mr Atkinson, who defeated Sir Henry Thompson, the Liberal candidate, by a larger majority than that polled by Mr Winn at the last election. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,350,000 quarters. Prime New Zealand mutton is realising an average of to SJ-d per lb. Cairo, July 11. Brigadier-General Green, R.E., has proceeded to Assouan on the First Cifaiact, taking with him half the Regiment, 2000 ilussais. General Brackenbury telegraphs a report that the Malidi is dead ; but the rumour is said to lack confirmation. Madrid, July 12. The number of cases of cholera reported to the sanitary authorities is on the decrease, and there are hopes that the violence of the epidemic is abating. Washington, July 11.
The monthly returns of the United States Agricultural Bureau, just published, estimate the coming American wheat oron at 363 million, bushels.
Teneriffe, July 10. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamship Kaikoura left yesterday for New Zealand ports.

[special to press association.] London, July 8. Later intelligence from Annam states that General Courcy, who is in command of the French troops, has arrested the Regent of Annam. The French Government have ratified the Egyptian Convention. Votes of thanks will shortly be passed by Parliament to New South Wales, and to other Colonies, for their offers of men for the Soudan, and suitable rewards will be made to members of the contingent for their services. Thirty thousand pounds has been voted to the Princess Beatrice by Parliament. Mr Gladstone has endorsed the Afghan policy laid down by the Marquis of Salisbury. A no-confidence motion, tabled by Sir Wilfrid Lawson against the new Ministry, has failed completely. July 9. Four thousand French troops are to be sent to Madagascar in compliance with Admiral Micht's request for reinforcements. The Marquis of Salisbury's policy has been favourably commented on by the St. Petersburg and Continental Press.
