BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall, on Thursday evening; present —His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Olden, Ziegler, Molvihill, Fitzsimons, Maloney, and Campbell. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence was read and received, and cousidered. Letter from Mr James Home relative to the construction of a drain, from the public drain, First street, thereby diverting the water from said drain into and through his garden ; and notifying the Council to re-divert the water into its original channel ; in default of which he should be compelled (although reluctantly) to take legal steps for the protection of bis property. — On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Maloney, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee to report to next meeting. Applications for the subsidy of £SO per annum for night-watchman and lamp-lighter were read from George Bunker, J. Morris, R. A. Gilmour, Joseph Pfaff, Thos. A. Qneale, Jas. M'Ewen, Carlo Marro, C. L\ Sumsion, Fred. Thompson. The applications were reduced by ballot to four, as follow—Pfaff, Queale, M'Ewen, and Bunker. The applications were further reduced to two, when the choice lay between Queale and M'Ewen. Cr. Campbell moved and Cr. MuMhill seconded—" That the subsidy be granted to Mr Queale." Cr. Anderson moved as an amendment —"That the subsidy be granted to Mr M'Ewen, as he had been appointed apparatus keeper by the Fire Brigade. Cr. Ziegler seconded the amendment.
A division took place on the amendment, as follows : Ayes, 5 The Mayor, Ci-8. Anderson, Olden, Ziegler, and Fitzsimons ; Noes, 3 —Crs. Campbell, Mulvihill, Maloney. The amendment was then put as tbe substantive resolution, and carried. On tbe motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Ziegler, it was also resolved that the grant.be subject to one month's notice, at any time, of discontinuation. A letter from Mr Salvatore Garguilo applying for a few loads of gravel for the approach to his cottage in First street was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Another letter was received from Mr Millson, wishing to know if the Council intended to put Union street in repair, according to promise some eleven months ago. The old culvert that he called their attention to in his recent letter had now another hole in the centre of it. If the Council wished to make a private street of it, let them hand the street over to him, and he would keep it in repair himself. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Olden, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee, to report to next meeting. The Council then adjourned for ten minutes, and sat as a Board of Health. On resuming, afterwards, The Mayor moved Council adjourn to Thursday, the 16th July, at 8 p.m.; and that the Reserves Committee bring up a report as to the progress of the work on the Borough Recerve, and in the event of the survey not being completed that the Town Clerk be authorised to extend the time for the same. The motion was seconded by Cr. Olden, and carried; and the Council then adjourned.
