PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[united press association.] Blenheim, July 8. A flood occurred at Blenheim last night. The Taylor river was swollen by a long-continued rain having descended upon the town. The water in the principal streets was four inches higher than the Opawa flood four weeks ago. No such Taylor visitation has occurred for five or six years. The weather is now fine, and the water is rapidly going down. Wellington, Jaly 8. The Government Gazette notifies the appointment of F. E. Clarke as deputysheriff of Westland ; also, the appointment J. G. Hislop, Reefton, G. Webster, Hokitika, and T. Watson of Blenheim assessors for the Nelson property assessment. Dunedin, July 10. Donald Reid, barrister, is announced as a candidate for Bruce. Auckland, July 10. Charles Walter Saugston, veterinary surgeon, has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment for fraud in connection with the sale of a horse. Mr Napier does not iutend to apply for a writ of habeas corpus, in the St. Louis murder case, and Maxwell will therefore be sent back to America in the next mail steamer. The detectives are now preparing the necessary formalities.
