PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[united press association.] Christchurch, July 2. The Christchurch Goldruining Company, which has been formed for the purpose of mining the quartz reefs at Browning's Pass, at the head of the Wilberforce, a branch of the Rakaia river, has been successfully floated here. The work of making a road from the flats to the Pass, was commenced today. Just after ten o'clock last night, an elderly man named William Wall died suddenly at the Plough Hotel, Rangiora. He was quite well an hour or two before, and fell asleep in the billiard room. He had recently received a good sum for threshing, and had been drinking, though not to excess. He was a single man, 40 years of age. Wellington, July 2. The body of a man was found in the harbour this morning. Name not known. Two fixed deposit receipts on the Bank of New Zealand, Masterton, amounting to £155, together with two £5 notes and some silver was found in his pocket. Later. The man found in the harbor to-day has been identified as John Scanlon, ganger on the railway at Masterton. A lumper named Thomas Cook fell down dead to-night, while working on the Aorangi. The cause is heart disease, He is supposed to have a wife at Port Chalmers.
