Dunedin, May 8. The defence works at Taiaroa Heads are nearly completed. The A.O. men there have mounted the three 64cwt. and the 7iu. guns. BOATING FATALITY—FOUR MEN DROWNED. Thames, May 10. A melancholy boating accident occurred at the eatcauce to the Thames
liver yesterday. It appears that about noon four men named W. Rea (senior), W. Rea (junior), A. S. Coiquhouu, and John James started from Tararu for Piako in an open boat during a severe north-easterly gale. The boat was not seen to capsize, but later in the day the master of a river steamer repeated having observed wreckage at the mouth of the Thames river. The boat was found bottom upwards on mid-chaunel this morning, but there was uo sign of the occupants, and no hope is entertained of their survival, though the sails, pieces of the rudder, and provisions have been recovered. The whole community is astir taking part in the search for the bodies. The three elder men were married, and leave families unprovided for.
