PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Auckland, May 6. The steamship City of Sydney arrived at one o’clock this morning, after a very heavy passage. She has four cabin passengers—Mrs York Messrs Cowan, Coal bank, and Moore, and 17 steerage passengers, and 92 tons cargo for New Zealand ; also, 45 cabin passengers for Sydney. The steamer left for Sydney at 4 this afternoon. Lee, a bushman, and John Norton contractor, were drowned at Mercury Bay yesterday through the capsizing 0 f a boat.
Wellington, May 6. It has not yet been decided whether the Militia will be called out, but in any case unless hostilities occur between Russia and England they will only be called cut at Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Dunedin. FOUR MEN LOST. Wellington, May 5. A boat containing four men, three of whom were engaged in the defence works, proceeded to the head of Evans Bay at 1 p.rn. yesterday, for the purpose of loading up with sand. They have not since been heard of, and it is feared that the boat capsized in a squall The names of the missing men are : Boatman, Ned Glanville; navvies Timothy Doyle, Patri b Dickey, and Neilson.
Later. Nothing farther has been seen of the missing men, but the oars belonging to their boat have been found on Petone beach, which leaves but little doubt that the men have perished.
