BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Borongh Council (adjourned from Thursday) was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening last, at 8 o’clock] present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.j Councillors Nicholson, Fitzsimonsj Anderson, Olden, Ziegler, Davies, and Maloney. • The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward received and considered. SCHOOL OP MINES. An application from the School of Mines for the use of the Town Hall was granted ] the Town Hall Committee to arrange as to the portion of the building to be set apart for a laboratory, PUBLIC WORKS. The Public Works Committee’s report was read. It recommended

That the attention of the maintenance con trad or he called to the state of the culvert in Union street, by Mr Millson’s slaughter yards. “ That notice be given to the contractor to finish the Tank in Seddon street, and that no progress payment be granted until the work is finished ; and in the event of the contractor not doing so within one week that the Council finish the same at the contractor’s expense, and also that the contractor place a light at night until the tank is filled up safe for traffic. “ That the account for painting the Fire Brigade Station be paid. “ That M‘Keegan’s account for timber on his maintenance contract be referred to the Council.” On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Olden, the report was received and adopted. RACECOURSE. A report from the Reserves Committee was then read. The Committee recommended “That a course 80 chains long and 33 feet wide (instead of 60 chains long and 66 feet wide, as previously intended) be prepared] and that all timber up to nine inches in diameter be felled in the centre, inside the running ground] and also that a piece of ground be prepared lor general purposes. Plans and specifications were also submitted, and the Committee recommended that tenders be called for the work as soon as possible.” The report was received and considered, the recommendations adopted, and the Reserves Committee authorised to complete the laying-off the course, and to call for tenders, to be returnable by the 31st hist. STATEMENTS. The Treasurer read the Abstract of Accounts for the six months endin« 31st March, 1885 ] a Statement of Assets and Liabilities ] a Statement of Reserves and other Real Estate] also the Annual Balance-Sheet for the year ending 31st March, 1885, together with the Report of the Borough Audi tors. The Statements were received and ordered to be published. NUISANCES. A report from the Inspector of Nuisances was read and received. FINANCE. The Finance Committee’s Report was read, and the sum of £7B 19s 7d passed for payment. A report from the Inspector of Contracts was received, and the sum of •£ll 9s 5d passed to the maintenance contractor for timber. The. Mayor and the Chairman of the Finance Committee were appointed to wait on the manager of the Bank of New Zealand in ivfcrence to the borough bank account.
