[united press association.] Christchurch, May 2. Thomas Balgrove, laborer, employed by the Riccarton Road Board, was found hanging in his house at Adding, ton this afternoon. He was a single man, steady, in good circumstances, but bis health had peen ailing lately. Tiharu, May 2. A man named Woods attempted to commit suicide on Saturday by lying down in front of an express train as it was leaving Timaru station. The train was only four feet away when stopped. Woods had previously had a prohibition order taken out against himself. # A very heavy gale swept over the district early yesterday, but so far no damage is reported from the back country.

Wellington, May 2. A heavy southerly gale is now (Saturday) blowing, with heavy rainfall, and in consequence the races have been postponed until Monday; but it is considered probable that the course will be in too wet a condition to race even then.

THE PUBLIC ACCOUNTS. Wellington, May 2. The Public Accounts are now ready. The year’s balance on ordinary revenue and expenditure account shows a surplus of £22,003 Is 6d. Last year’s deficiency was £152,111 18s 7d, and £150,000 remains in deficiency bills. The balance (£2,111 18s 7d) has been written off, reducing the surplus to £19,891 2s lid. The figures on the 31st March stand as follow :—Cash in public account, £186,397 11s 10d ; advances in hands of Government officers in England and colony, £33,493 Us Id; total, £219,891 2s lid. Deducting £200,000, amount of deficiency bills outstanding irrespective of last year’s deficit, the balance is £19.891 2s lid.
