BRITISH BUDGET STATEMENT. PROPOSED INCREASE OF INCOMETAX AND DUTY ON SPIRITS AND BEER. PUBLIC DEBT SINKING FUND. SHIP ARRIVALS. (Received May 1, 2.30 p.m.) London, April 30. The Right Hon. Hugh Culling E. Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer, delivered his budget statement in the House of Commons to-day. He announced that the revenue for the past financial year amounted to £88,050,000 and the expenditure to £89,100,000. The revenue for the current year he estimated at £85,000,000 and the expenditure at £88,750,000, exclusive of the naval and military credit of £11,000,000; so that the estimated deficiency at the end of this year would be £14,900,000. To cover this he proposed to increase the income tax to Bd, the duty on spirits by 2s, and on beer Is, and to suspend the Public Debt | Sinking Fund. | (Received April 10, 30 p.m.)

Shaw, Saville and Albion Company's steamship Arawa left Capetown on 16th inst (afternoon) for New Zealand. Per Merchant Shipping and Underwriters Aassooiation :—" Arrived, Hurunui from Port Chalmers, January 22nd; Pleione; from Wellington, January 17th ; Wairoa, from Napier, January 4th.
