[united press association.] EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY. Christchurch, April 29. The Westland County Council has guaranteed £IOO and the Ross Borough Council £25 towards the preliminary expenses connected with the West Coast railway, £2OB additional has also been guaranteed by private persons. The Nelson delegate has cabled that there is every reason to believe that the scheme will be entertained in the London market after the present crisis has passed.

THE BRYCE V. RUSDEN CASE. Wellington, April 29. A commission has been issued from the High Court of Chancery in the libel suit of Bryce v. Rnsden, appointing the Hon. Patrick Alphonsus Buckley commissioner to represent plaintiff, and the Hon. Joseph A. Tole commissioner to represent defendant in taking evidence in New Zealand, relative to the case. The sitting of the commission will probably he held in Wanganui about the 18th of May to take evidence, and in the meantime an application has been made to the Hon,

the Colonial Secretary to have exhumed the bodies of the Maori women and children who it was alleged in Mr Rusden’s history have been ruthlessly sabred by cavalry under Mr Bryce. This request has been acceded to on condition of all the parties agreeing to it, the Colonial Secretary’s stipulation that the examination shall be conducted in the presence of medical men nominated by him. The whole of the parties concerned have agreed to this.
