ARMED CRUISERS FOR BRITISH SERVICE. SMALL-POX NEAR MELBOURNE. (Received April 20, 10.40 p.m.) Sydney, April 20. The deadlock between the Pacific Mail Company and the Seamen's Union still continues. The captain of the Zealandia obtaining hands under the protection of the police refuses to accede to the demand of the Union that the Chinese shall not be employed aboard the vessel. Unless matters can be satisfactorily arranged with the Union, the Zealandia will not be able to sail with the outward 'Frisco mail on Thursday next, owing to the difficulty of obtaining non-unionist seamen. Owing to the recent telegrams indicating the probable peaceful settlnment of the Russo-Afghan question, the Government consider it at present unnecessary to close the weatern channel
at Port Jackson as proclaimed in the Government Gazette, 15th insfc. (Received April 21, 1 p.m.) Melbourne, April 21. It is announced that the Imperial Government have chartered ths Peninsular and Oriental Royal Mail steamship Rosetta for service as an armed cruiser ou the China station, and the Orient steamer Lusitania for similar service on Australian waters. A mild case of variola or small-pox was reported to the health authorities to-day from Hothara.
