THE TESTING MINERAL ORES.
* PROFESSOR BLACK'S LA.ST LECTURE. There was a goodly attendance at Professor Black's lecture, at the Theatre, Royal, on Thursday evening, when he delivered the last of his series on Mineralogy. The subjects of discourse were " Alluvial Drifts," and " Copper and Tin, and their Ores and Smelting." J. O'Hagan, Esq., J.P., occupied the chair. The Professor gave a most instructive discourse, with a number of experiments in illustration. At the conclusion of the lecture, on the motion of R. J. Seddon, Ear., M.H.R., votes of thanks were given to Professor Black and his assistant. Mr Montgomery, for their lectures, and for the great pains and interest they had taken with the members who had joined the testing-class. The motion was carried by acclamation. The Professor announced that it would probably be some months before he could visit Kumara again to lecture, but that Mr Montgomery, who is an excellent chemist, geologist, and metallurgist, would be back in a few days, and would assist those who had given in their names in forming a School of Mines.
