It will be seen by latest cablegrams this afternoon that persistent rumours are current in political circles in London that a peaceful settlement of the Russo-Afghan difficulty has been affected, although nothing definite has transpired. British troops are now 20 miles from Suakiu on the road to Berber. Sittings of the Assessment, KM., and Warden's Courts were held to-day. lieports will be given to-morrow. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council lapsed last evening for want of a quorum. There was, however, very little if any business to be transacted. Professor Black delivered the last of his series of lectures in the Theatre Royal last evening. A report will be given in another issue. The meeting at Kawhaka on Wednesday evening last for the purpose of holding a race meeting, picnic, and social gathering at Kawhaka about the Queen's Birthday was largely attended. Mr J. rial-court was elected chairman. A committee was formed of nine gentlemen to carry out the arrangements, with MiEdward Haylock as Secretary. The sum of £ll was collected in the room. Commander Edwin wired at noon today :—" Bad weather may be expected between north-east and north and west, and after 10 hours much rain • "lass further fall." lima di Murska, having failed to kill off her fourth or fifth husband, John Hill, is applying for a divorce from him, and
another divorce arising out of this is on the tapis, in which Mr Hill will appear as co-respondent. Public Notice.—Whereas it is publicly rumoured, and not without foundation, that the Flying Dutchman will be missing some fine morning shortly : such being the case he is determined his patrons shall have the benefit of the entire stock that will put competition out of the question ; and rather than the goods shall be handled by the limbs of the law they will be sold at a great sacrifice. Inspection invited, as the goods are of the first water. The sale will last until Monday next, and all goods must be sold. A fresh arrival of boots, groceries, drapery, &c, &c.—[Advt.]
