CRIMINAL SITTINGS. *. Thursday, April 16. [Before His Honor Chief Justice Prendergast.] The criminal session of the Supreme Court opened at 10 a.m. | The following gentlemen were sworn on the Grand Jury:—Messrs F. J, Barker, Peter Cran, Henry Harvey' John Nicholson, Wm. Nicholson, Thos' Daly, J. R. Hudson, W. D. Banks', Samuel Pizzey, J. p. Byrne, John M'Beath, Daniel Cullen, L. Ralphael, J. C. M. Malfroy, Andrew Cummiuw M'L. W. Jack, Elisha Lockington, r! Hirter, W. J. Eastgate, James Chesney and Charles Rose. Mr A. was chosen as Foreman. ° His Honor congratulated the Grand Jury on the freedom from crime the district enjoyed, there being only one case for them to consider, a charge of horse-stealing which needed no direction from him. The Grand Jury then retired to consider the bills sent in by the Crown Prosecutor; and, on their return presented true bills against William Harvey for horse stealing and larceny. HORSE STEALING AND LARCENY. William Harvey was charged with having on the 9th April, stolen a gelding, the property of James M'Ennis aud also a saddle, bridle and coat. ' The prisoner pleaded guilty to both charges, and said nothing in his defence. Sergeant Moeller said the prisoner had previously undergone two sentences—one for burglary, and the other for larceny, at Invercargill. The prisoner denied that he had been previously convicted. Sergeant Moeller said the guard on the Greymouth Railway could identify the prisoner. His Honor decided the witness be summoned to appear to-morrow morning, aud remanded the prisoner for sentence until then. The Crown Prosecutor asked if the sum of .£3 found on prisoner might be returned to the persons who bought the horse, saddle, and bridle fr-j prisoner. His Honor said even if he had the power to make such nn order he would not do so, as the persons had dealt with a perfect stranger to them, as the prisoner was. This concluded iho camiuul business.
