BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Westland Board of Education met at the County Council Chambers, Hokitika, on Tuesday, at 7.30 p.m.; present The Chairman (Mr R. J. Seddon), Messrs Grimmond, Mueller, Jack, and Rose. After adopting the minutes of previous meetings and the outward correspondence being read and approved of, The inward correspondence was then read and dealt with as follows : Letter from the Education Department, Wellington, informing the Board that after a conference with the Chairman when at Wellington, the Minister of Education had decided to give committees the unpaid half of the grant for the last quarter of 1883, and notifying that the sum of £62 15s 3d had been paid to the Board's credit for that purpose. Resolved—That the grant of money from Government for the payment of half the subsidy to school committees for the last quarter of 1883, be distributed amongst the committees according to Dr. Hislop's schedule. From the Education Department, notifying that £1126 lis 5d had been transmitted to the credit of the Board, that being the grant for school buildiugs for 1884-85, after settling claims under Commissioners' award.—Received. Resolved—That the amount of the building grant be transferred to the buildiug account at the Board's bank. From Dr. Hislop, relating to a suggestion of the Minister of Education, respecting the establishment of halftime schools on the Christchurch road, was read and received.—Consideration deferred. From the same, notifying the Minister's approval of the Board's scholarship i emulations,—Received From the Stafford Committee, recommending Elizabeth Firman as a pupil teacher to the Stafford School, and enclosing the head teacher's written opinion upon the proposed appointment as required by the regulations. ' Resolved—That Elizabeth Firman be appointed pupil teacher at the Stafford School, in accordance with the regulations. From the Secretary Grey CommiFsioners respecting Darnell's copy book. Consideration deferred. From the department, announcing a further payment on account of scholaislups for the curreut quarter.—Received. Resolved-That Mr Ryan be asked to prepare plans and specifications for additions to the Stafford School. Resolved—That monitors will not be allowed to compete for scholarships. Resolved—That the Chairman and Mr Rae be empowered to sign the contracts for painting the Ross, Donoghue, Kameri and Arahura Schools, and the Hokitika teacher's residence. Resolved—That fresh tenders be called for painting the Kumara School and teacher's residence, returnable in one week, and that the Chairman, Messers Mueller and Rae be empowered to accept the same. Resolved—That the Goldsborough Committee be requested to forward the specifications for fencing the school ground to the Board, prior to calling for tenders. Resolved—That the Finance Committee consist of the Chairman, Messrs Rae, Jack and Mueller, three to form a quorum. Mr Grimmond gave notice that at the next meeting he would move, "That the Board vote Mr W. D. M'Kay three months' salary as compensation for loss of appointment without notice." The Board rose at 12.30 on Wednesday morning.
