Gleeson, Greymouth, £1324. * This evening the Government received the following telegram from the Agent-General: “Quite uncertain whether peace preserved. Gladstone’s statement last night not reassuring. Naval preparations active. ” Telegrams received from the AgentGeneral by the Government states that <( Affairs in Russia are still grave,” No mention is made of prosecuting defences. Dunedin, April 15. A deputation from the University Council waited on the Hon. Mr Larnach to-day to ask Government assistance towards permanently establishing a school of mines in connection with the University. Mr Larnach said he thought he would have little difficulty in pursuading his colleagues to meet the Council in the matter. Mr Larnach leaves for the north this morning. Seventeen prisoners were charged at the Police Court with misconduct and insubordination in refusing to work at the heads. Vickers, a ringleader, was sentenced to eight days’ bread and water, and to forfeit 50 marks, while the others got five days’ bread and water. The glove fight Pettingell v. Scott resulted in favor of the former, who had an easy victory, Scott being beaten at every point. A lad about 16 named Smith, son of a hotelkeeper at Anderson’s Bay, died very suddenly to-night. He returned to school apparently quite well, was taken ill about half-past five, and died within an hour. Dr. Oaughtrey does not know the cause. An inquest will probably be held. Auckland, April 15. 0. J. Stone, one of the wealthiest and oldest settlers in Auckland, died of heart disease at 7.30 this morning. He has been 43 years in the colony, and was a director of the Bank of New Zealand, and largely interested in the timber and mining industries. His sons are Stone Bros., the well-known ship owners.
