(Received April 16, 0.40 a.m.) London, April 14. It is announced that the Peninsular and Oriental Company’s new steamship Massilia and another vessel belonging to one of the large ocean lines are being equipped to serve as armed cruisers on the Australian naval station. [This cannot be correct as regards the Massilia, which boat arrived at King George’s Sound on the 6th inst., from London, and was due at Melbourne yesterday, with London mails to March 6th.— Ed. K. T.] It has been arranged that the Earl of Derby shall introduce the Australasian Federal Council Bill in the House of Lords on Thursday next. (Received April 15, 2.45 p.m.) Rio de Janeiro, April 14. Shaw, Saville and Albion Company’s steamship Doric, from Wellington, April 22, left this morning for Plymouth. The French psper, Bosphore Egyptienne, says it is supposed that M. Floquot will succeed M. Henri Brisson as President of the Chamber of Deputies. The Chinese troops will evacuate Tonquin on May 16th, The French blockade of Formosa will be raised tomorrow. A great Indian rising is feared in North-West Canada. The Oriental Bank are forming an Asset Company, with a capital of £600,000, for the purpose of dealing with colonists. Captain Gieves has been selected for the command of the Queensland Artillery. As a result of the Commission of Inquiry into the German land claims in Fiji, it is believed that Mr Sahl will alone receive a small compensation. The Pacific Commissioners will bring up their report next week. It is believed that at all points, with the exception of Samoa, steps will be taken to absolutely suppress the sale of arms and explosive substances of all descriptions, and the sale of alcoholic liquors. Measures will also be taken in regard to the labor trade. Ellis and Co., of Bradford, millers, have failed for £60,000.
