THE COONAMBLE GAOL TRAGEDY.
Some particulars of the escape from Coonable Gaol of the two prisoners Angel and Thurstone, who, after killing a storekeeper, were shot on Friday last by New South Wales police, were given in a telegram from Sydney on the 12th. ultimo, as follows:—'"A shocking tragedy occurred at Coonamble gaol this morning. Iu one cell were two prisoners, named Angel, sentenced to four years for cattle stealing, and Thurstone, a prisoner in irons. When the turnkey, White, entered to clean the cell, the two prisoners pounced upon him, knocked him down, and took his revolver from him. The turnkey, while down, called aloud, when Mitchell, the warder, hearing the scuffle, rushed to the scene. The prisoner Angel then took the revolver from Thurstone, and defied Mitchell 10 approach. The warder, however, advanced, when Angel fired, the bullet entering Mitchell's left breast, just below the heart, going right through and out at the back. Mitchell fell, whereupon the two prisoners made their escape, and are now at large, armed with the revolver. Mitchell lies iu great pain in a dying state." What followed was given iu an Australian telegram, received late on Saturday evening, and published yesterday.
