[united press association.] Blenheim, April 11. Henry M'Regney, labourer, aged 40, was killed yesterday afternoon by a tree falling across his neck. Deceased was a sober, industrious man, and leaves a widow and four young children. At the inquest the verdict was "accidental death." April 13. John Wilson, alias Coborn, has been committed for trial at the Supreme Court for rape on a girl nine years and three months old. Wellington, April 13. J. Gordon Allan, a well known solicitor and barrister, died here yesterday, aged about 63. On Friday last he was attacked with an affection of the throat, pronounced to be laryngitis, aud he •sank rapidly. It is stated that the lowest tender for the first section of the North Island Main Trunk Railway from the southern end, is that of a Wanganui firm, the amount being in rouud numbers, £27,500. ' Bishop Redwood left by the steamer Ruapehu this evening for England, en route for Europe. His sudden departure is somewhat of a surprise, and the nature of his mission is not disclosed. The Rev. Father MacNamara has been appointed to take charge of the Diocese daring the Bishop's absence. Government this afternoon received a telegram from Otaki stating that a large man-of-war was in sight off there. She was standing east, evidently bound to Wellington, and should that .be so, she should arrive here late to-night or early to-morrow morning. The vessel is believed to be H.M.S. Espiegel, which left Australia under sealed orders ■a few days ago. Auckland, April 11. The infant child of Mr Wood, schoolmaster, was poisoned by eating matches. At the criminal session, John Brown, for attemptad murder of Thomas Brown, was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude. The Provincial Grand Master of the Irish Constitution of Freemasons, Mr G. P. Pierce, has received a reply from the Prince of Wales to the congratulatory telegram sent last week to the Grand Lodge in Dublin upon his visit to Ireland. His Royal Highness thanks the Provincial Grand Master most sincerely for the telegram and the good wishes contained therein.
