Large accessions have been made to the ranks of Volunteers during the past day or two, and an “Otago trained band” is proposed to be formed of men who have been members of any disciplined force. A shoemaker named Paterson has gone missing at Balclutha. His two carpet bags and his hat have been found on the river bank, and it is believed he has been drowned. Christchurch, April 10. A deputation of dealers in arms waited on Mr Ballance and requested that restrictions on the sale of arms (as to sending in returns, &c.) might be removed in the South Island, The Minister of Defence agreed to grant the request. The Minister for Defence eas accepted the servicesof a Mounted Infantry Corps for Christchurch, and of the Lyttelton Land Artillery.
