HOSPITAL EASTER FETE.
The Kumara Hospital Easter Fete was commenced yesterday at the Recreation Ground; but, so far as the sports were concerned the programme was only partially gone through, in fact twelve out of the eighteen events remain to be carried out. The weather kept fine throughout the day, and there was a goodly attendance of people on the ground. The following sporting events were contested on the Recreation Ground during the afternoon, with the various results:— Handicap Foot Race.—loo, 200, 300, and 440 yards. Points, 4,3, 2, 1. First prize, L 4 ; second, L2; third, LI. Entrance, 2s ; acceptance, Is. Six to accept, or no race. 100 Yards. Joseph Stenhouse, 5 yards 1 William Surgenor, 8 yards 2 Stewart Sherman, 2 yards 3 John Woods, 8 yards ... 4 Henry Greenwood,scratch 0 James M'Gregor, Wm. Hobbs, and Arthur Williamson did not start. 440 Yards. Stenhouse, 12 yards ... 1 Surgenor, 18 yards ... 2 Woods, 20 yards ... 3 Hobbs, 12 yards ... 4 Greenwood and Sherman also started, but the first-named only ran a few yards, and gave in, finding himself quite out of condition. Quoit Match.—lß yards—First prize, H; second, 10s ; third, ss. R. Bell 1 R. Davidson ... ... 2 Thos. Walmsley... ... 3 J. Keller, R. Renton, and W. Harvey also competed. Running High Jump.—First prize, 15s; second, 10s; third, ss. J. M‘Gregor ... ... 1 P. Chambers ... ... 2 Greenwood and Smith divided third prize. Highland Fling.—First prize, LI; second, 10s. James M'Gregor ... 1 P. Rooney ... ... 2 M'Davitt and Perkins also entered. Messrs T. Stewart and Hugh M'Masters acted as judges. Mr M'Gregor, the winner, hails from Greymouth. He wore several medals, presented to him by the Caledonian Societies of Christchurch, Amberley, Tiraaru, and Wanganui. At the suggestion of some of his admirers he gave a specimen of his ability in a Sword Dance ; and was greatly applauded. Sailors’ Hornpipe, in costume.—First prize, LI; second, 10s. M‘Gregor ... ... 1 J. Rouse... ... ... 2 Hope and Mansfield also entered. The concert and ball at the Theatre Royal in the evening were both well attended, and passed of very successfully. We intend to notice the former more fully in to-morrow’s issue. The sports are being continued this afternoon. The Brass Band is playing on the ground again.
