BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Nicholson, G. Anderson, Olden, Campbell, Moloney, and Ziegler. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read aud npproved of. The inward correspondence was read, received, and considered. A letter was read from the Hon. Mr Bowen, as Chairman of the East aud West Coast Railway Committee at Christchurch, asking the help of the Council. Cr. Campbell moved—" That the Town Clerk reply that this Council I will co-operate with the East and West Coast Railway Committee as far as posj «ible." j Cr. Maloney seconded the motion. j The Mayor did not approve of the I motion or think it right to pledge the , Council to give pecuuiary assistance; He moved as an amendment " That the letter be referred to the Finance Committee." If he recollected arightly the Railway Committee had already been informed that this Council was not in a position to give pecuniary assistance. Cr. Campbell intimated that there was nothing in the letter to show that the Railway Committee really wanted pecuniary aid. It simply asked for general assistance. The amendment was then put to a division which resulted as follows: A.yes, 3—The Mayor, Crs. Olden, and Ziegler; Noes, 4—Crs. Nicholson, Anderson, Campbell, and Maloney. In reply to an application from the Hospital Committee, by the Secretary Mr R. E. Wylde, leave was granted for the use of the Recreation Ground for the Hospital fete on Easter Monday. Id reply to a letter from the Secretary Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr M. Gerraghty, calling the attention of the Council to the necessity of having the Brigade Station painted, it was resolved that the letter be referred to the Public Works Committee, to report to next meeting. A printed memorandum in reference to applications for space for exhibits in the proposed New Zealand Industrial Exhibition to be held iu Wellington (a copy of which, being addressed to the Editor, was published in the Kumara Times on Monday last)—was read and received, and, On the motion of Cr. Campbell, seconded by Cr. Nicholsou, it was resolved that an advertisement be inserted in the local paper calling the attention of the public to the proposed New Zealand Exhibition, for which applications for space for exhibits are invited. The Town Clerk read the Public Works Committee's Report, which recom mended—"l. That the Town Clerk notify Mr Gow (Manager Public Works Department) that the covering of the Government race crossing Seddon and Tui streets had fallen in, aud request him to repair it; and in the eveut of his refusing to do so, that the maintenance contractor be instructed to get it repaired. " 2. .That the Town Clerk be authorised to order a load of waste from the mill, and engage a man to cover the dangerous place at the back of Mr Kroener's .section, and also to repair the damage done by the Circus at the Recreation Ground. " 3. That the Council be recommended to have the drain at the rear of premises in Main street, from Mr Ziegler's to the Tram way Statiou, cleared out, in accordance with the Report of the Inspector of Nuisances. "4. That the Borough Inspector be instructed to ascertain from the contractor whether he would be willinw to cut the Zigzag bluff at schedule prices, and deposit the same under the instructions of the Inspector, for the sum of Is 5d per yard, according to the schedule price for cutting." The report was received and considered, and the several clauses adopted, the Chairman Public Works Committee being authorised to have the work recommended in clause 3 carried out. The Town Clerk then read the Reserves Committee's Report, as follows: "Letter read from the Churchwardens of the Church of England relative to a piece of ground in the Cemetery to lie set apait lor i,ne use of that de-
"The Mayor and Ci\ Olden reported having visited the ground, and they explained the position of the various blocks at present in use. "The Committee recommend — "1. That a quarter of an acre be set apart in the Cemetery for the use of the Church of England, in accordance with the resolution of the Council, 11th October, 1877, granting a quarter of an acre to each denomination. "2. That the Council take steps to have half an acre more of the Cemetery cleared, in order that the blocks may progress in regular order. " That immediate steps be taken to have the present paths in the Cemetery cleared and put in order. "4. That the County Council be applied to for assistance in clearing a further portion of the Cemetery, and repairing the fences, &c, which are at present in a most disgraceful state of repair." The report was received and considered. Clause 1 was adopted, and the Reserves Committee instructed to lay off the ground. Clause 2 was adopted, and it was resolved that tenders be called for clearing half an acre. Clauses 3 and 4 were adopted as read. A report from the Finance Committee was then read. It recommended payment of accounts amounting in all to £4B Is 6d. The report was adopted, the amount passed for payment, and the Council then adjourned till Thursday next, the 26th inst., at 8 p.m., to consider the applications which may then be received for the office of Town Clerk, «kc.
