■ ♦ [united press association.] Dunedin, March 20. At the Police Court to-day Fred. Fulton, who offered to find the Dunedin contingent for the Soudan, was committed for trial on the charge of shooting at with intent to murder Michael Hayes. The accused was walking in Princes street south -when some altercation took place beween him and Hayes, who was accompanied by others, the police giving them the character of larrikins. The accused considered he had been insulted, took out a revolver, and after it had once missed fire discharged a barrel at Hayes, who, with his mates, ran off speedily. The accused was drunk and excited when arrested, and said he was sorry he had missed the fellow. He was admitted to bail. Wellington, March 19. The annual four-oar outrigger race between the Star Rowing Club (Wellington) and the Union Rowing Club (Christchurch) took place this afternoon. The weather was fine and the water smooth. There was a capital start. Wellington had a slight lead after going 200 yards, but before half a mile had been covered the visitors took the lead, and were never again headed, winning rather easily by three lengths. No time was taken. The Wellington crew appeared to be exhausted at the finish, while the Christchurch men were evidently pulling well within themselves. The Christchurch v. Wellington crews left for Wanganui this evening to take part in the regatta there. The Wanganui crew attending the Wellington Regatta are also passengers. March 20. The Premier has received a letter from King Malieota, of Samoa, enclosing a copy of the Act passed by the Sanioan Parliament annexing thai island to New Zealand. Thirty-two of the A.C. force arrived from Auckland to-day by the Rotomahana and Rotorua. They have come to Wellington to be instructed in big gun practice. The Stella which arrived from Opunake this morning, brought another party of 31 Armed Constabulary. Napier, March 20. An insolvent having drawn the first horse in Jacob Faithful's Consultation now pays his creditors in full. Wanganui, March 20. A young man named Lewis was killed to-day on John Hewitt's farm, No. 1 line, by a fall of gravel. John Higgie, well known in racing matters, died rather suddenly to-day at the Red Lion Hotel.
