[united PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Westport, March 16. A. severe shock of earthquake was fplt here at 11.30 on Saturday night. The motion was from. W. to E., and lasted ahoafc 50 seconds. Wellington, March 16. The Government has received information as to the valuable discovery of a seam of tin ore on the West Coast, north of Kavamea, in an accessible position. A number of leases have already been applied for, and several specimens of ore have been sent to the Government. In view of the posible complication in Europe, the Government have arranged to have the cable open all night, as well as the principal towns in New Zealand, so that any important news may be circulated as speedily as possible. The Hon. Mr Larnach left for south to-day, and will tour round the Otago goldfields. It is understood that twelve tenders were received to-day for the erection of the Industrial Exhibition buildings. New Plymouth, March 16. A heavy gale was experienced at Opunake on Saturday. Courtney's hall was blown down and other buildings damaged. The Stella and Oreti put into the bay for safety at Cape Egmont. Two settlers' houses (Wallace and Forney's) were blown down, and the families had to seek refuge in a neighbour's house. At New Plymouth the gale was severe, but little damage was done. The breakwater is uninjured, although the storm was the heaviest ever known here. DUNEDIN, March 16.
