BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Westland Board of Education was held in the Board’s temporary office, Hokitika, on Wednesday, at 11 a.m.; present—Messrs M'Whirter, Jack, Dale, Mueller, and the Chairman (Mr E. J. Seddon). The following particulars of the business relating to this part of the district are from the Times : The inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows; From the Kumara Committee, recommending the appointment of Miss Jane Anne Seddon as pupil teacher in the Kumara School, vice W. Voysey, who has resigned. The recommendation was accompanied by the written opinion of the head teacher, as required by the regulations. Resolved—That Jane Anne Seddon be appointed a pupil teacher of the fourth class, at the Kumara School, as recommended by the committee; the appointment to date from February Ist. 1885. J From the Kumara Committee informig the Board that the lavatories and tanks had been put in repair by Committee. Resolved—That the Chairman’s ‘ explanation of the unauthorised expenditure having been given, the Board agree to pay the cost incurred for repairing tanks, &c., but that the committee be requested not again to incur any expense without first obtaining leave from the Board. From the Kumara Committee asking for freehand drawing copies for the head teacher’s use. Resolved—That drawing copies be supplied as soon as procurable, to the head teachers of all schools, on application. The same letter contained a request for a supply of slates and pencils for the infant department. Resolved—That the Kumara Committee be informed that the Board cannot agree to supply slates and pencils, as requested. From the Stafford School Committee nominating teachers for appointment. Resolved—That the Board approve of the recommendation to appoint Mr Burn and Miss Hogg to the Stafford School. Fiom the Stafford Committee asking the Board to furnish a supply of stationery for the use of the secretary. The Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board had abandoned the practice of keeping a stock of stationery for the use of committees. From the Stafford Committee forwarding the resignation of Crawford Glover as pupu teacher, without the usual month’s notice. Resolved—That the resignation of Crawford Glover be accepted. Irom W. R. Glover, respecting the cause of his son’s resignation, was read and received.—The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr Glover that as his son’s resignation had been accepted, there was no necessity for giving out the subject of his letter. The Board then adjourned to 9.30 a.m., on Thursday, March 12. The Board met on Thursday at 10 a.m.; present Messrs M‘Whirter Mueller, Dale, Jack, and the Chairman. The consideration of the inward correspondence was continued. A petition was presented by Mr M'Whirter from 110 inhabitants of Stafford and the neighborhood, praying for the removal of a water-race in front of the school.—Received. Resolved that the Chairman and Mr M'Whirter report on the petition respecting the ivce through the school ground at Stafford. Deferred letter from the Stafford Committee, respect in 'he staff at that school.

Resolved—That Andrew Stevenson’s services as a first-class pupil teacher be retained until 31st December, 1885. From Rev. James Hosking, of Kumara, respecting His son’s scholarship, and forwarding certificate of birth. Resolved—That Mr Hosking be informed that on consideration, the Boaid have decided to grant his son a scholarship, of .£6O per annum. From Joshua Gibson forwarding the certificate of his son’s birth. Resolved—That in accordance with tho Board’s regulation respecting scholarships, the treasurer be authorised to pay to Messrs Gibson and Hosking the first quarter’s scholarships grant, the scholarships to commence on April 1, 1885. From the Minister of Education, to the effect that it is unnecessary to reopen the Native School at Arahura.— Received. From the Education Department, agreeing to the adoption for three years of the junior pupil teacher’s regulations.—Received. Resolved—That the science text book for the scholarship examination for 1886 be Forster’s Physiology, and that the teachers be informed accordingly* Resolved—That tho whole of the amount due by teachers for books sold be deducted from next month’s salaries. Resolved—That the books on the old Board’s printed list be the books to be used in the Westland Schools until further instructions. Resolved—that the Secretary ascertain the best means of disposing of Darnell’s copy books. The report of the Treasurer, for the two months ending February 28, was read, received, and approved. Resolved—That the ordinary monthly meetings of the Board be fixed for the second Tuesday in each month, at 7 p.m. Resolved—That a committee consisting of the Chairman , Messrs Rae and Mueller, be appointed to revise and draft regulations. Resolved That the Secretary schedule the applications for grants out of the building vote, and that a special meeting of the Board be held on Tuesday evening next, March 17th, to deal with the same. The Board rose at 12.30 p.m.
