[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright. NEW SOUTH WALES SOUDAN CONTINGENT. THE PROPOSED JOINT AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT. VICTORIAN LOCAL DEFENCES. (Received March 13, 1.20 p.m.) Sydney, March 13, Arrived, last evening, the Pacific Mail steamship Australia, from Auckland. Sailed, yesterday afternoon, the Hauroto, fot Wellington, and the Ringarooma, for Auckland. At a banquet last night at Dubbo, the Hon. W. B. Dailey, Attorney-Gen-eral, made an eloquent speech vindicating the policy of the Government in in reference to the Soudan contingent. Melbourne, March 13. The Victorian, South Australian, and Queensland Governments, after consulting as to the proposed joint contingent for Egypt, desire to obtain further information from the AgentsGeneral, and the question is consequently in abeyance. In some quarters it is considered that the Anglo-Russian question has altered the situation as regards colonial troops for Soudan. Tne Victorian Cabinet has had the question of local defences under consideration, but their decision in the matter is kept secret.
