Mr Sargood, Defence Minister, has approved of the proposal to invite Royal Navy officers to offer for service in connection with local defences. Considerable anxiety is expressed here regarding the present unprotected state of Albany, West Australia. Despatches from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania on the subject of Federation have been forwarded to London. Extra naval precautions are being taken here, and the force will probably be materially augmented without delay. Attention is, however, being given to the use of torpedoes for defensive purposes.
