Parleying is still proceeding between England and Russia on the Afghan question \ but, so far as known, no progress has been made toward an amicable settlement. The Times to-day states that a collision is imminent, that a fresh Russian advance has taken place in the direction of Herat, and that Sir Peter Lumsden, the British Commissioner, has consequently been directed by the Government to organise defensive measures to be pursued by the Afghans against the Russian advance. The Times further states that British troops from India have been ordered to occupy the Robaht Pass, on the Hindoo Khoosh, between Herat and the frontier, (Received March 12, 2.45 p.m.) Night. A proposal made to Parliament to grant twenty thousand pounds to the family of the late General Gordon is being opposed by Government. Benjamin St. John Ackers, a Conservative, has been elected to the House of Commons for West Gloucestershire, vice Colonel Robert Nigel Kingscote, C. 8., Liberal, resigned, ° [special to press association.] London, March 6. The revelations contained in the Blue took on New Guinea, recently issued, showing the original advances made by Prince Bismarck to England with regard to that island, are causing an alienation of French sympathy with Germany. March 8. Lord Carrington, the new Governor of New South Wales, is unlikely to leave England until the end of the year. Lord Northbrook states that the Admiralty are anxious to promote the formation of an Australian navy. By a colliery explosion in Austria 120 lives have been lost. March 9.
