The House of Commons rejected Stafford Northcote’s motion of censure on the Egyptian policy of the Government by a majority of 14. In the House of Lords the Marquis of Salisbury’s motion, condemning the Egyptian policy of the Government, was carried by a majority of 121. (Received March 2, 11.20 a.m.) March 1. The result of the divisions on Sir Stafford Northcote’s motion of censure in the House of Commons and on Lord Salisbury’s motion in the House of Lords will not cause the Government to resign j but the Cabinet will continue in office. The Prrnellitea supported the motion of censure on the Government, It is announced that George Anderson, M.P. for Glasgow City, has been appointed Deputy Master of the Royal Mint, Melbourne, vice Delves-Brough-ton, deceased. The Australian mails per Orient Royal Mail steamship Australia, from Melbourne, January 23rd, were delivered on Friday. Madeira, February 27. A combined German-Austrian squadron, consisting of a frigate, a cruiser, a corvette, and a gun boat has been formed, but its destination is not yet known. [special to press association,] ' London, February 24. In the House of Lords the Earl of Carnarvon warmly eulogised the offer of the Colonies to send troops to the Soudan. Mr Gladstone has refused to give a pledge that he will establish a Government for the administration of affairs at Khartoum. February 25. At a meeting in Loudon, Earl Dunraven advocated and spoke strongly in favor of imposing a tax on foreign imports, which should go to forming a federal defence fund. Hon. A. Joseph, M.L C., of New South Wales, opposed the Earl’s views, and said the proposal was absurd. The Hon. Robt. Meade, suggests that England should only surrender the New Hebrides to Prance on terms that will satisfy Australia. He is of opinion that the protection instituted by England over the Southern portion of New Guinea has just forestalled an objectionable foreign scheme. He avers that the misunderstanding arose in the first place through Count Munster, German Ambassador in London, not complying with the orders sent him in August last to inform Loid Granville of the purpose of Dr. Finch’s expedition. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received the following cable message, dated Hobart, February 26th;—“The .Royal Mail steamer Rimutaki arrived at Hobart at noon, to-day, and leaves again at 3 a.m., tomorrow.
