Some 50,000 people assembled in Moor Park, Sydney, on Saturday afternoon, to witness a review of the Volunteers forming the Soudan Contingent. This was the reason no doubt of so little interest being taken in the sculling match for the championship of the world between Beach and Clifford, which appears to have been avery hollow affair. The grand dramatic peformance in aid >of the Church of England Sunday School will take place at the Theatre Royal this evening when the thrilling romantic drama, entitled “The Sea of Ice,” or “ The Wild Flower of Mexico,” will be produced. The Brass Band will be in attendance. The scenery and mechanical effects are to be on a grand scale ; and judging from previous efforts of the ladies and gentlemen who are taking part in the performance, an excellent evening’s entertainment may be expected. Tenders are required by the Education Commissioners of the district of Grey for painting school buildings. They must be sent in to the Education Office, Greymouth, on or before Monday, 16th inst. Specifications may be seen on application to the Chairman of each of the following school committees :—Greenstone, Dunganville, Kynnersley, No Town, Nelson Creek, and Totara Flat. The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted. Boaz’ eighth grand Hamburg drawing is now open. There are 320 money prizes offered. It will close at the end of April. Intending investors in the Hibernian Company’s Consultation are reminded that, as the drawing will positively take place on Monday, 16th inst., the day previous to the race, it will be necessary to make early application for remaining shares. We have received Robin Hood programmes and results, which shall have attention to-morrow. Ladies should not fail to visit J. Manson, and Co.’s clearing sale. A great reduction has been made in all classes of d rapery, —[Advt. ] Moral Turpitude.—Blame attaches to a jury of intelligent men when they condemn a man for crime whose moral nature has been perverted by indigestion, diseased liver and kidneys. A thoughtful judge may well consider whether society would not be better served by ordering a bottle of Hop Bitters for the unfortunate in the dock instead of years of penal servitude.
