The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, MARCH 2, 1885.

“It is unusual for Reuter’s Agency to be found wanting,” writes the Grey River Argus this morning, “ bub it has beeu singularly remiss in respect to the race between Beach and Clifford. On Saturday night we learned the naked result of the race, and naturally assumed that particulars would come to hand some time on Sunday. But after waiting patiently until 2 o’clock on Monday morning without any further intelligence, we gave it up as a bad job and went to press. This is the only excuse we can offer our readers.” As regards ourselves, we have still further complaint to make. We are contributors iu all respects to Reuter’s Agency same as the morning papers, whom Reuter supplies; and have rarely any fault to find with the Agency. But on this occasion we not only did not receive on Saturday night any account of the race, but not even the “ naked result.” A long message was received from Melbourne at Wakapuaka at 7.30 p.m., giving particulars of the Victoria Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting at Footscray that afternoon ; and, if the truth were known, the news concerning the sculling championship of the world was transmitted to New Zealand before that hour; yet we

received not even the “naked result” of the sculling race on Saturday; and, in fact, did not receive the cablegram till this morning, between 10.30 and 11 o’clock. The simple statement at the heading of the message that it was “ Delayed in transmission from Australia” is not satisfactory—it has been customary if a message has been delayed even then to prefix the time at which it was received; bub this was not done in this instance. Moreover, if the result was known in Greymouth on Saturday, it should have been known in Kumara, and (even if delayed) at an early hour this morning; but the message came alone and last of all the others received this morning. We shall require an explanation from Reuter’s agent at Wellington, or the Telegraph Department, or both. Meanwhile these are the only apologies we can offer our readers.
