WESTLAND BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board met at the County Council Chambers, on Tuesday evening last; present —Mr Seddon (Chairman), Messrs Jack, M'Whirter, Rae, and Dale. The following is a report from the Times of the business pertaining to this part of the district:— A telegram was received from the Secretary for Education, Wellington, approving of the Pupil Teachers' Regulations and respecting the appointment of senior pupil teachers.—Resolved—that the telegram re appointment of monitors be heldover till further reply is received from the Department. Several letters and telegrams from the Department, containing information and instructions relative to the payment of old Board's liabilities, were read and received.
Letters from the Chairmen or Secretaries of the following committees announcing the results of the aunual election, and in some cases, forwarding copies of report and balance-sheet, were read and received .-—Bruce Bay, Totara, Woodstock, Blue Spur, Arahura Road, Kokatahi, Stafford, Waimea. Several of the balance-sheets show a debit balance.
It was resolved that the Secretary be empowered to collect all the unpaid accounts incurred from the time the School Committees in Westland were requested by the Government to continue in office, and forward the same to the Minister of Education, as requested by him. A letter from the Kuniara Committee calling attention to the great necessity for repairing and painting the school and teacher's residence was held over
until the distribution of the building vote is considered.
From the same committee nominating teachers for appointment at Kumara and Rangiriri Schools. Resolved— That the appointment of teachers recommended by the Kumara Committee be made by the Board. Letter from the same committee asking for authority to expend money on small repairs. was received, and consideration deferred till building matters are dealt with.
A letter from the Stafford Committee respecting necessary repairs to the Stafford School.—Consideration deferred. Letter from the Stafford Committee respecting the appointment of Cranford Glover as pupil teacher. The Secretary was instructed to draw the attention of the committee to the new regulations respecting the appointment of pupil teachers. Letter from the same committee urging the Board to retain the services of Mr Stevenson. The Secretary was instructed to ascertain when Mr Stevenson's four years' term of service would expire.
The Secretary placed on the table the result of the late scholarship examination, and it was resolved—(l) That the candidate who gained the highest marks be awarded the first scholarship, on certificate of birth being produced. (2) That the candidate who gained the second highest marks be awarded the second scholarship, on certificate of birth being produced. (3) That the papers of the candidates who competed at the late scholarship examination be open for inspection by the parents and teachers of the competitors at the Education office.
It was also resolved—That all accounts against the Board be rendered and paid monthly; and that school requisites be allowed for the ose of teachers of schools.
The meeting adjourned to Wednesday, March 11, at 11.30 p.m.
