Captain Lord Charles Beresford succeeded in rescuing Sir Charles Wilson after a sharp action with the fort below the Shabnkli Cataract. During the engagement a shot from the fort penetrated the boiler of the steamer under his command, but the damage was successfully repaired under fire. Korti, February 9. General Gordon was killed while leaving his home in the city. He was betrayed by Faragh Pasha, the commander of his Soudanese troops. London, February 10. It is reported at Gubat that General Gordon was killed on the morning of the 27th January. (Received February 13, 11 a.m.) February 12. A telegram is received from Wolseley announcing that a battle has beeu fought with the enemy at a place opposite Bucka, on the Nile, about seventy miles above Merawi. The Mahdites attacked the troops under General Earle, on both flunks and front, and a severe engagement ensued, resulting in the complete defeat of the enemy, scarcely any of whom escaped. General Earle, and Colonels Eyre and Coveny [? Cavaye] and eight men were killed, and four officers (including Col. Wanchop) and thirty-eight men were severely wounded. Wolseley expects to be able to open the way to Berber without further fighting. Colonel Brackenbury has assumed the command of the column, in place of Earle, and will contiime to advance to Berber.

In the battle near Bucka, the Mahdites are estimated to have numbered 1500 men.
