His Excellency the Governor will arrive here by special train on the 10th inst.
The Hon. Stuart, Premier of New South Wales, who arrived, at the Bluff on Friday, has gone on a visit to the Lakes.
Mv "William Bridgewater, of Glen and the ex-Mayor of Caversham, had a narrow escape from death on the railway on Saturday forenoon. He was making a short cut to the railway station along the line, when the 11 a.m. train came up behind him. The engine driver whistled long and loud, but Mr Bridgewater was absorbed in thought. The train was at his heels before he knew anything about it. He made a spring, but it was too late, and the cow catcher knocked him off the line. Happily the speed was slow, and when the guard picked him up he had only got a slight scalp wound in addition to a severe fright. A boy named Samuel Cooper, son of William Cooper, carpenter, aged 13, was drowned while bathing in the surf at St. Clear on Saturday afternoon. There were numbers bathing, but nobody saw him drown, and his clothes being found on the beach led to the knowledge that he was missing. He could not swim.
Christchukch, February 7,
A cabinetmaker named Plank, residing nt Woolston, committed suicide by poison to-day. It is said that he attempted his life some time ago. No reason is assigned for the act. Auckland,. February 6.
Ballance met Tawhaio at Whatiwhatihoe to-day. 500 natives were present. Tawhaio agreed to the railway on condition that he be allowed the management of Native affairs in the King country. Ballance said there could be only one Government in New Zealand. Before leaving, he invited Tawhaio and Te Wheoro to Wellington next session to talk over matters concerning the Native race.
Harry Martin, son of Albin Martin, who went out shooting yesterday, was found shot dead in a swamp to-day. The trigger of his gun apparently had caught on a wire fence.
