GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting of the Grey County Council was held at the County Chambers, Greymouth, on Wednesday evening; present—Councillors Clifford (chairman), M'Kechnie, Warren, Foley, Marshall, Parfitt, Taylor, and Ryall. The following business pertaining to the southern part of the county was transacted : GREENSTONE BRIDGE. The Engineer reported that a new bridge was required at the Greenstone, which would cost xBOO. The timber of the present bridge was rotten and would require to be removed at no distant date. Cr. Foley said that as it would only be .a waste of money to spend any on this bridge, the best thing they could do would be to make plans and specifications and call for tenders for a new bridge. He therefore moved that the road overseer be authorised to draw plans for a new bridge. Cr. Ryall .seconded, as he considered the work one of uece.-sity, that undo-
any circumstances it must be done sometime.
Cr. Marshall asked what course they would be prepared to take if the ratepayers of the district refused to levy a special rate to guarantee, the construction of the Arnold, Greenstone, and other bridgps. It seemed to him that in such a case they should try to undertake their construction out of ordinary revenue, The Chairman said that although they were bound to strike a rate, it did not follow that they were bound to collect it. Further discussion was postponed till a later period of the sitting. DEVIATION OF ROAD AT GREENSTONE BRIDGE. Cr. Foley moved that plans and speciScations be prepared for the deviation recommended by the Road Overseer.—Cairied. CLAIM FOR DETENTION. A letter was read from Mr L. J. Spyer threatening legal proceedings if the Council did not meet his claim for the detention of his dray and horses at the Greenstone bridge. The Road Overseer said Mr Spyer had been detained a couple of hours, ile was not quite sure whether he could have taken his dray across the creek. Cr. Parfitt moved that no action be taken in the matter. Cr. Ryall seconded. Carried. ItEUBEN WAITE. Letter from Eugene O'Couor, Chairman of the Buller County Council, asking the Git>y County to join with the other counties on the West Const in making some provision for the maintenance of Reuben Waite (prospector) and his wife, who are now unprovided for. Consideration was postponed until inquiries are made into the merits of the case.
