Our cablegrams to-day state the first battle between the Arabs and British troops in Sondan has been fought and resulted in a brilliant victory for the British. The commander had his horse shot under him. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council, which should have been held last evening, was adjourned till 8 o'clock tonight.
There were sittings of the R.M. and Warden's Courts held to-day. Our report is held over.
A meeting of the Burns Anniversary celebration committee was held last evening. The number of tickets applied for give confidence to the promoters that the banquet and ball next Monday will be largely attended. It is arranged that the ball shall commence at nine o'clock, in the Adelphi Theatre ; and the supper at eleven o'clock, in the Masonic Hall. This course has been taken owing to the Local School Committee election, which is appointed to be held at the School on Monday, the same night, at 8 o'clock, in which great interest is usually manifested. J. M'Whirter. Esq., M.C.C., has kindly consented to preside at the banquet, and J. O'Hagan Esq., to occupy the vicechair. We observe the Hon. J. A. Bonar is to preside at the Hokitika Burns festival.

A private match for £2O a-side, took place on the racecourse, Central Buller, on Friday, the 16th inst., between Mr A. Smith's Illumination, and Mr L. Warnn's Bonnie Doon. The distance was one mile, with 6st. 71bs. up, and the race resulted in an easy victory for Illumination, who won without being asked to gallop. An Australian press agent reports: — "The race-horse Tom Brown, having wrenched one of his hind legs, was unable to start for the Anniversary Handicap." Well, very likely he would not be able; we do not know of any horse, racer or otherwise, that would, under similar circumstances, or even enter for a handicap. A five-roomed cottage, an atire of ground with a number of fruit trees on it, and a five-stall stable, in First street, are for sale. Particulars can be obtained on application to Mr P. Whelan, on the premises, or to Mrs Harrison, of the Shamrock Hotel.
