TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Davis.—As we are not aware of its occurrence having taken place yet, we cannot give you the date of Jefferson Davis's decease. Certainly he has lived for many years after the time you mention, 1863 to 1865. After the fall of Richmond, in the last-mentioned year, Davis was captured when endeavouring to escape, and was kept a prisoner in Fortress Monroe for two years. He was released on bail in 1867, and finally set at liberty by the general amnesty of December 25, 1868. After a visit to Europe, Davis settled at Memphis, Tennessee. So recently as 1881 he published a book on "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government." If he lives to the 3rd of next June, he will be 77 years of age.
