Auckland, January 21
Mrs Overing, wife of a blacksmith at Tepuke, near Tauranga, committed suicide by swallowing a quantity of strychnine on Monday. The Harbor Board are pressing Auckland’s claim as a naval station on the Lords of the Admiralty. Mrs Fredericks, wife of a negro minstrel, J, S. Fredericks, has horsewhipped a young man named Edward Prentice, under the belief that he had circulated scandalous stories concerning her.
Dunedin, January 21
Edward Berry committed suicide in South Dunedin by hanging, owing, it is alleged, to doubts of his wife’s fidelity, he was 50 years of age. The Synod has decided to use its endeavours to influence the Legislature to amend the Education Act by sanctioning the introduction of the Bible in the state Schools. It is rumored that Government intends sending Mr Macandrew to Scotland, to arrange for a settlement of Highland crofters in New Zealand.
