[REUTER'S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. CRICKET. ENGLISHMEN V. COMBINED AUSTRALIANS. THE CHAMPION SCULLING RACE. (Received January 3, 1.5 a.in.) Melbourne, January 2. The cricket match between the English eleven and the combined Australian team was continued to-day, when the former resumed their first innings, which closed for a total of 401. The highest scorer was Briggs, caught, 124. The Australians then went in for their first inniugs, and at the close of the day had lost three wickets for 151. The principal scorers were Horan (Victoria) caught, 64, and Trimble (Victoria), not out, 41. Riverton, January 1. The champion sculling race turned out a hollow affair. A punctual start was made, the wind being rather choppy. At the start Harrington got ahead, but by bad steering lost his advantage, and Hearn entered the narrows 50 yards ahead. Just as Hearn was clearing the uarrows, Harrington's boat swamped, and he gave up (he race after covering about half the distance. Hearn then leisurely pulled home, the time being 30 minutes. There was the largest crowd of people that had ever been seen in Riverton, numbering fully 3000 people. An impression got abroad that Harrington had been guilty of foul play, but those who saw the accident and know him best, including Hearn's backers, scouted the idea and agreed that the swamping was purely accidental.
