A late cable message states that Mr Gladstone is unwell, and confined to his house. The attention of the Medical Officer of Health was yesterday drawn to a supposed or assumed case of scarlet fever in this town, but on that gentleman visiting the patient he reported to the Chairman of the Board of Health his opinion that it was not scarlet fever, nor with appropriate treatment was there anything dangerous or infectious about the case, though it was highly probable that similar rashes would not be uncommon among the children in Kumara. About £20,000 worth of gold has been sold to the banks in Kumara during the past six weeks. In a paragraph yesterday we stated that Frank Bird, Esq., R.M., is appointed Sheriff for the District of Westland- North from the Ist January, 1885, vice W. H. Re veil, Esq., resigned. In a portion of the issue the word " Sheriff" was inadvertently omitted. At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, before A. C. Campbell and T. R. Connell, Esqs., J».Ps!, Edward Murphy was brought up and charged with four offences—(l), being drunk and disorderly, (2), using obscene language, (3), resisting and assaulting the police, (4), wilful destruction of Government property. He was convicted in each offence, and for the first, fined 5s and 2s costs of Court, or 24 hours' imprisonment; second, two months' imprisonment with hard labour in Hokitika Gaol, without any option; third, fined £2 and 2s costs, or 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour; and fourth, fined £1 or 7s costs, and 12s 6d value of property destroyed, or 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour in Hokitika Gaol; sentences to be cumulative—in all three months. A large number of excursionists drove down this morning to the picnic at the Upper Crossing, Arahura. The Brass Band were conveyed in Cameron's big coach. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, at the usual hour. The County Council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday next, the 7 th inst., to make arrangements for the reception of his Excellency the Governor. The following other appointments of meetings are made :—" Small Birds' Nuisance Act Committee—(The County Chairman and Messrs Seddon, Jack, M'Whirter, and Clarke), Monday, sth inst., at 11.30 a.m. Revision of Standing Orders Committee—(The County Chairman and Messrs M'Whirter, Seddon, Jack, Dungan, and M'Goldrick), on Wednesday, the 7th inst., at 11.30 a.m. The time of his Excellency's visit to Westland is quite uncertain ; it is not yet settled. By a private letter received by Mr Bevan, the member for Hokitika, it is understood that in all probability the Hon. J. Ballance, the present Minister of Mines, may pay Westland a visit prior to the next session, unless in the meantime the portfolio of Mines should be transferred to some other member of the Ministry, a possible contingency owing to the many duties of the offices held by Mr Ballance at present occupying a great deal of his time and attention, especially in Native affairs. The County Council invite tenders in this day's issue for construction of sections 3,4, and 5, Kumara Beach road (separate tenders for each section), and for horse and dray supply, for one year, in the Arahura, Kanieri, and Totara ridings. Tenders close on Tuesday, the 13th inst., at 5 p.m. at the Council Chambers, Hokitika. Plans and specifications of the Kumara Beach road may be seen at the Council Chambers, and also at Mr R. J. Seddou's, Kumara. Specifications for the horse and dray road may be seen at the several places set forth in the advertisement. I
Persons who are wont to anxiously wait or watch the delivery of expected communications from the post or telegraph office will now be easily able to distinguish, the youthful messenger, as he is from today robed in red stripes, with the great insignia of V.R. on her Majesty's silver coat-buttons. The only drawback to the proceedings at the second day's sports at Hokitika, the Times says, was the fact that Mr E. J. T. Price, the well-known contractor, broke his knee cap while wrestling playfully with a friend. Mr Price was promptly removed to his house by Dr. King's orders, and is now as well as can be expected. The Presbyterian Bazaar will be closed to-night after the Dutch auction sale, which commences at 8 p.m. Tenders for the purchase of a full share in Ooombe and party's sluicing claim at Rutherglen, with water-rights, cottage, &c, the property of the late Thomas Walker, deceased, will be received till Monday next, the Bth inst., by Messrs Guinness and Kitchingham, solicitors, Greymouth. Terms and conditions can be ascertained on application to Mr George Walker, Seddon street, Kumara. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will sell by auction at Arahura, on Monday next, choice seasonable bullocks, and a large number of prime cross-bred wethers. Shareholders in Wiesner's New Year gift distribution are requested to meet at the Town Hall at seven o'clock this evening.
A gold locket and chain were lost last week above Dillman's. The finder is offered a reward on delivery to Mr R. Rothwell, Dillman's.
