OCEAN STEAMSHIP RACE

Considerable interest has been felt during recently in the result of a race between the newly-acquired Canard steamer Oregon and the “ National ” liner America, which had previously made a very fast passage. These two vessels left New York on October Sth, the Cunard clearing the wharf about twenty minutes ahead of the America, and as it was the first time these two splendid steamers had l>eeen pitted against each other, heavy sums were laid both in New York and Liverpool as to which would arrive first. At ten minutes before twelve on the night of October 14 the Oregon sighted off Browbeacl. She had made the passage in six days nine hours and twenty-seven minutes. The America arrived at Queenstown on the morning of the loth, having made the passage in six days 18 hours seven minutes, nearly nine hours longer than the Oregon.
