ANNOUNCED LECTURE ON LIFE ASSURANCE.

[to the editor.] Sir —l was greatly disappoined last night after seeing Mr Seaborn’s lecture advertised in your paper, at walking down two miles from here on purpose—and not I only, but at least a dozen others—to find the lecture had been deferred to another night. The only reason we could hear of its postponement was that as no bellman could be found there could be no audience. Are we a lot of wild beasts that nothing will take us out to an intellectual discourse (or any other entertain meat for the matter of that) but the ringing of a bell ? Most of those who went down last night said they should not repeat the tramp to-night. Why was not the lecturer himself present to explain the cause ?—I am, &c., An Intending Insurer. Larrikins, Dec. 9, 1884.
