ANNUAL EXAMINATION REPORTS

To the Chairman of the School Committee, Kumara, Kumara, 24th October, 1884. Sir — l have examined the schools iu your district with the following results. I have, &c., John Smith,

To R. J. Seddon, Esq., Chairman of the Local School Committee. Sir—l have the honour to present my report for the past month. Boys. Girls. Tls. No. on registers 157 158 315 No. admitted ... 6 9 15 No. withdrawn... 13 4 Strict average ... 118-7 114-3 233 The average attendance is a decided improvement upon that of the previous month. There is still, however, not a little irregularity on the part of a number of scholars. This must be ascribed to the remissness of parents, some of whom display a surprising amount of indifference as to the education of their children. It is well to remind such that they are acting not only most unjustly to their own children, but that the progress of the whole school is to some extent retarded by their own reprehensible conduct. The annual examination was held on Monday, October 20th, and the three following days. As the Inspector examined all the work on paper the same week, he was in a position to give the results before leaving the district. A copy of those results accompanies this report.

I regret to say that illness prevented Miss Ingall from attending the Pupil Teachers’ examination. The same cause explains her absence from school during the past month. Four dozen slates are needed for the Infant Department. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, James Woodward. Kuiuara, December 1, 188-1.
