Dunedin, December 1. To-night's Herald says it is rumoured that the Hon. R. Stout intends to bring an action against the leading Dunedin newspaper for alleged libel in a letter recently published. Auckland, December 1.
J. Humphreys, secretary of the Northern Shipping Company, died on Saturday of blood poisoning, caused by eating pork. His predecessor died from a similar cause a few weeks previously.
William Baker had his arm fractured by a cricket-ball while playing in the Domain on Saturday. Christchurch, December 1.
An influential meeting re the West Coast railway was held this evening, when it was decided to undertake prelirainary arrangements for the construction of the line, and a committee was appointed to take the necessary steps. The meeting was a private one, and details have not transpired. R. Hill's well-known stud greyhound Champagne Charlie was accidentally killed in his kennel on Thursday last.
Wellington, December 1
The police are laying an information against an employer of female labor named Henry Edwards for employing girls after hours on Saturdays, aud also for not providing proper means of ventilation.
The Hon. the Premier left for the south this afternoon.
The only Ministers now in Wellington are Sir Julius Yogel and the Hon. Mr Buckley. The Minister for Public Works is expected to return from the south on Wednesday, and Mr Ballance about Friday.
Gisborne, December 1. Major Ropata is seriously ill. The mate and three men going off to a ship in a boat capsized, but the men were rescued by a boat from another vessel.
A small boat also capsized on the bar, and the occupant named Busch was rescued in a very exhausted state.
