A telegram is received here from Lord VVolseley stating that the Mahdi is short of provisions, and his troops are discontented and suffering severely from sickness, and that 500 of the rebels have tendered their submission to General Gordon.

Wolseley also stated that after arriving at Khartoum aud relieving the garrison there, the British expedition will return by way of Souakim.

Sir James and Lady Prendergast are passengers to New Zealand by the Valetta, which arrived yesterday.

Melbourne, December 2. A destructive fire occurred at one o'clock this morning at Salicleve's Bonded Store, Lonsdale street.
