The election of four members of the new Education Board of the District of Westland take-; place on the 23rd December next. In the first place, each School Committee- in Westland is required to nominate miy two persons they choose as candidates, the consent of such persons being first obtained in wilting. The names of the two per-
sons so selected, with their consent in writing to act, if elected, must be forwarded to the Returniug Officer, Mr M. F. South, so as to reach his office, Hokitika, before the Bth December next. Immediately after this date Mr South will publicly notify the names of the whole of the persons nominated by the different committees, and the committees, on seeing this list, are to meet and select the names of any four of them, and forward said four names to Mr South, so as to reach him (as previously stated), before the 23rd December. The school committees are therefore to set themselves in motion at once, and they are not to wait on forms being supplied to them, for this is dispensed with. A simple notification to Mr South, distinctly written, will suffice, such as— To M. F. South, Esq., Hokitika. We nominate Mr , of , and Mr , of , as candidates for seats at the Westland Board of Education, and append their consent. (Signed) A. 8., Chairman of Local School Committee. Dated this day of , 1884. The same form will do for the election papers for the four candidates selected, with the substitution of the word " select" or "elect," instead of "nominate." The notice to school committees appears in auother column.
By a report given elsewhere from the Wellington correspondent of the Press, it will be seen that Mr Blair (Assistant-Engineer-in-Chief) unhesitatingly recommended to Parliament the adoption of the Arthur's Pass route for the East and West Coast Railway. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon with a large complement of passengers, including three West Coast M.H.Rs. The Protectorate assumed by her Majesty's Government over New Guinea will extend along the southern shores and the country adjacent, and the islands in Goschen Straits as far as Kosman Island. No person will be allowed to settle within the protectorate or to acquire land there, unless specially authorised by the British Government officer. At the Wesleyan Church to-morrow, the Rev. J. Law, of Greymouth will preach, morning and evening. Mr Patrick Foley will address the electors of Hohonu, Grey County, at Westbrook, on Monday evening next. Margaret M'Namara, who followed a mounted constable for nearly 2000 miles in South Australia, disguised as a bushman, with the intention of shooting him for the injury he had done to her, was bound over to keep the peace for twelve months. There is now living in a village in Leicestershire a young lady who, although only 14 years old, is 6ft. sin. in height, and weighs over 18 stone. Her feet are of an enormous size, and her hands so large that gloves have to be specially made for her in Paris. She is the daughter of a widow in affluent circumstances, and is highly accomplished. An eagle shot a while since in Lapland had around its neck a brass chain fastened to a small tin box. In this box was a paper, on which was written, "Caught and set free again in 1702, by N. and C. Anderson, Boetod, in Falster, Denmark." Had it been let alone, the eagle would soon have been able to celebrate its centenary.
