An agreement between the Legislative Council and the Assembly has been arrived at regarding the amendments to the Land Bill, and it is now expected that the measure will become law next week. Melbourne, October 10, Arrived, this morning, the steamship Rotomahana, from the Bluff. Another death has occurred here from small-pox. Cupola is scratched for the Melbourne Cup. (Received October 11, 0.40 a.m.) October 11. The following is the latest betting on the Caulfield Cup:—Colstoun, 10 to 1; Frying Pan, 17 to 1; Hastings, 14 to 1; Martini-Henri, 20 to 1. (Received October 11, 1.20 p.m.) Later. The Hon. Mr Service (Premier of Victoria) and the Hon. Mr Griffiths Premier of Queensland) have received telegrams intimating that the Imperial Government will shortly instruct the Commodore of the Australian station to proclaim a British protectorate over the south portion of New Guinea and the adjacent islands.
